Chapter Fourteen
October 27, 12:10 A.M.
Cyrus and Kyna stood in the shower with their arms wrapped around each other as they let the hot water soak the chill from their bones. Afterward, they gave each other a good rubdown with the motel's plush towels and climbed into bed. Kyna pulled the down comforter up to her chin and said, "I thought you were supposed to be my bodyguard."
They wrestled around under the covers for a while, not really making lovefor after what they had been through, neither of them could work up much enthusiasm for thatjust fondling and holding. Reassuring each other that they were all right. Cyrus coaxed a smile from her by bouncing around the bed on all fours, whining and pretending to tuck his tail between his legs as he told her how frightened he'd been. They slept with their arms entwined until a stripe of bright sunlight fell across Kyna's eyes.
Over breakfast they decided to pack up and hit the road early, before some beachcomber stumbled across the remains of the previous night's festivities. The plan was for a leisurely drive down the coast to San Diego, maybe pausing in Big Sur and stopping for lunch in Santa Barbara, then heading east to pick up the freeway in hopes of speeding through the madness of Los Angeles.
As the Lincoln powered its way south, the scenery changed once more. After the crippling rains of the summer, Southern California was in the midst of a drought and both the inhabitants of the tiny towns they passed and the surrounding foli-
